The Cinque Terre (5 lands) is on the Italian Riviera. It's a rugged portion of coast in the Liguria
region of Italy, near La Spezia. "The Five Lands" are the five villages: Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia,
Manarola, and Riomaggiore. The entire area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
For centuries, people built terraces on the rugged steep hills right up to the cliffs that overlook
the sea. Paths, trains and boats connect the villages. Going by car you generally have to park on the outskirts and
walk on the steep streets into the villages. Cinque Terre has become a popular tourist destination for
Europeans and Americans.
